NOTE VARIE E STORICHE...| La pianta viene usata da 2000 anni dalla medicina tradizionale indiana Ayurvedica contro gonorrea, alterazioni mestruali, ulcere cutanee e disturbi del metabolismo.
Nomi comuni e origine
Conosciuta come “Chanca Piedra” in Sud America, termine che in spagnolo significa “rompi-pietra”, riferendosi al suo uso tradizionale nel trattamento dei calcoli renali.
In India è chiamata “Bhumi Amla” o “Bhumyamalaki”, e fa parte della medicina ayurvedica da secoli.
Appartiene alla famiglia Phyllanthaceae, con origine tropicale, diffusa in India, Sud-est asiatico, Africa e America Latina.
Uso storico nella medicina tradizionale
È stata usata tradizionalmente per problemi epatici, calcoli renali, disturbi digestivi, febbri e infezioni urinarie.
In Ayurveda, è considerata una pianta “Rasayana”, ossia tonica e rigenerante, che sostiene il fegato e il sistema immunitario.
In medicina popolare amazzonica, le foglie e i decotti venivano impiegati anche come antispasmodici e diuretici.
Curiosità etnobotaniche
Il soprannome “Chanca Piedra” ha ispirato studi scientifici sul suo potenziale effetto litolitico, ossia la capacità di contribuire alla riduzione dei calcoli renali.
Nonostante le piccole dimensioni dei fiori e delle foglie, la pianta possiede un elevato contenuto di lignani e flavonoidi, responsabili di molte delle proprietà biologiche attribuitele.
In alcune regioni, viene coltivata come pianta ornamentale da giardino, soprattutto in aree tropicali e subtropicali, grazie alla sua crescita rapida e alla resistenza.
È considerata una pianta “amarezza funzionale”, ovvero un alimento o erba che stimola la digestione attraverso il sapore amaro, utilizzata in tisane digestive tradizionali.
Note chimiche e curiosità scientifiche
Contiene composti bioattivi come phyllanthin, hypophyllanthin e flavonoidi, studiati per attività epatoprotettive, antiossidanti e antivirali.
Non è una pianta mellifera di rilievo: i suoi fiori piccoli non sono sufficientemente produttivi di nettare per la produzione di miele significativo.
Ha attratto l’attenzione della fitoterapia moderna per il suo potenziale uso nella protezione epatica e nel supporto del metabolismo, pur essendo una pianta di piccole dimensioni e dall’aspetto discreto.
