NOTE VARIE E STORICHE...| Il termine "Copaifera" deriva dal Tupi-Guarani "copaíba", che significa "pianta che produce resina", mentre "officinalis" ne indica l’uso medicinale.
Fu classificata per la prima volta dal botanico Nicolas Jacquin nel 1760, durante esplorazioni nelle Americhe.
Medicina Amazzonica: Gli indigeni Brasiliani e Peruviani usavano la resina come cicatrizzante per ferite, antidoto per morsi di serpente e rimedio per infezioni urinarie. Era chiamata "olio della foresta" per la sua versatilità. Alcune tribù la bruciavano come incenso purificatore durante cerimonie sciamaniche.
I coloni portoghesi esportavano la resina in Europa, dove veniva usata come balsamo per la tubercolosi e lubrificante per macchine.
In medicina popolare, era considerata un rimedio per sifilide e blenorragia (oggi smentito).
Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il Brasile usò l’olio di copaiba come carburante alternativo per auto, data la carenza di petrolio.
Oggi è usato in profumi fissativi per la sua ricchezza in sesquiterpeni. Compare in saponi e creme per pelli acneiche.
I raccoglitori tradizionali credevano che la resina fossero lacrime spirituali della pianta, da prelevare con rispetto per non "adirarla".
Alcune tribù la portavano come amuleto contro il malocchio.
