NOTE VARIE E STORICHE...| Salacia reticulata Wight è una pianta originaria dell’Asia meridionale, in particolare India e Sri Lanka, dove è profondamente integrata nella medicina ayurvedica tradizionale come rimedio per il controllo della glicemia.
Nella tradizione locale è conosciuta con diversi nomi vernacolari ed è spesso utilizzata come componente di preparazioni erboristiche complesse piuttosto che come droga singola.
Un aspetto peculiare è che alcune comunità utilizzano il legno della pianta per preparare utensili destinati al contatto con l’acqua potabile, con l’idea tradizionale che ciò possa contribuire al controllo metabolico, pratica che riflette un uso culturale più che scientificamente validato.
Dal punto di vista fitochimico la specie ha attirato interesse scientifico relativamente recente per la presenza di composti tiosaccaridici rari, come salacinolo e kotalanolo, non comuni nel regno vegetale.
A differenza di molte piante medicinali tradizionali, Salacia reticulata è stata oggetto di un crescente interesse industriale come ingrediente di integratori per il metabolismo glucidico, con sviluppo di estratti standardizzati.
La raccolta della radice, che rappresenta la principale droga utilizzata, ha sollevato in alcune aree problematiche di sostenibilità, poiché comporta l’estirpazione della pianta e può incidere sulle popolazioni naturali. |
