NOTE VARIE E STORICHE...| Il nome del genere Petasites deriva dal greco “petasos”, che indica un ampio cappello a tesa larga indossato nell’antica Grecia, in riferimento alla grande dimensione delle foglie della pianta, tra le più ampie nel contesto della flora europea spontanea.
L’epiteto officinalis riflette il suo impiego storico nelle officine farmaceutiche tradizionali, dove veniva utilizzata come rimedio per diverse affezioni, in particolare respiratorie e febbrili.
Nella medicina popolare europea la pianta era conosciuta come “farfaraccio maggiore” ed era impiegata già nel Medioevo per il trattamento della peste, da cui deriva uno dei nomi comuni inglesi “plague flower”, anche se tale uso non ha riscontro scientifico moderno.
Le foglie venivano tradizionalmente utilizzate anche per scopi pratici, come avvolgere burro e altri alimenti freschi grazie alla loro ampiezza e consistenza, funzione che ha contribuito alla diffusione del nome inglese “butterbur”.
Dal punto di vista ecologico, Petasites officinalis cresce preferenzialmente in ambienti umidi e lungo corsi d’acqua, formando popolamenti densi grazie a un robusto apparato rizomatoso che ne facilita la propagazione vegetativa.
Una caratteristica botanica rilevante è la comparsa precoce delle infiorescenze, che emergono prima delle foglie all’inizio della primavera, rendendo la pianta facilmente riconoscibile nel suo ciclo fenologico.
Nonostante il lungo uso tradizionale, la pianta ha acquisito rilevanza scientifica moderna solo dopo l’identificazione dei suoi principali costituenti attivi, come le petasine, e parallelamente dei composti tossici, in particolare gli alcaloidi pirrolizidinici, che hanno portato a una rivalutazione critica del suo impiego fitoterapico. |
