NOTE VARIE E STORICHE...| Ecballium elaterium è una delle poche piante al mondo dotate di un meccanismo di disseminazione esplosiva estremamente sviluppato. Quando il frutto raggiunge la maturazione, la pressione interna aumenta fino a provocarne il distacco improvviso dal peduncolo con espulsione violenta del contenuto mucillaginoso e dei semi a diversi metri di distanza.
Il nome generico Ecballium deriva dal greco antico e significa letteralmente "scagliare fuori" o "espellere", in riferimento proprio alla caratteristica dispersione esplosiva dei semi.
L'epiteto specifico elaterium è legato all'antico medicamento noto come elaterio, una sostanza ottenuta dal succo del frutto che veniva utilizzata già nella medicina greca e romana come purgante estremamente potente.
La specie era conosciuta da medici dell'antichità quali Dioscoride e Galeno, che ne descrissero gli impieghi terapeutici e gli effetti drastici.
Nel Medioevo e nel Rinascimento l'elaterio era considerato uno dei purganti vegetali più energici disponibili, ma era già noto che il suo impiego potesse provocare effetti avversi molto gravi.
La pianta è spontanea in gran parte del bacino mediterraneo e cresce frequentemente in ambienti aridi, terreni disturbati, ruderi, margini stradali e aree costiere.
A maturazione il frutto può espellere i semi con accelerazioni molto elevate rispetto alle sue dimensioni, costituendo uno degli esempi più studiati di dispersione balistica nei vegetali.
Il succo fresco del frutto è stato utilizzato tradizionalmente per applicazioni nasali contro la sinusite, pratica che ha attirato l'interesse della ricerca moderna ma che ha anche portato alla descrizione di numerosi casi clinici di edema grave delle vie aeree superiori.
Dal punto di vista fitochimico la specie è nota soprattutto per il contenuto di cucurbitacine, composti altamente ossigenati che contribuiscono sia alle attività biologiche osservate sia alla marcata tossicità della pianta.
Nonostante la lunga storia medicinale, Ecballium elaterium è oggi considerata principalmente una specie di interesse etnobotanico, tossicologico e farmacognostico piuttosto che una droga fitoterapica utilizzabile nella pratica moderna. |
