NOTE VARIE E STORICHE...| Euphorbia lathyris L. è conosciuta in Italia con il nome di catapuzia, termine tradizionale che richiama il suo storico impiego come purgante estremamente energico.
La specie è originaria probabilmente dell'area mediterranea orientale e dell'Asia occidentale, ma è stata introdotta e naturalizzata in numerose regioni temperate del mondo.
La pianta presenta un caratteristico portamento eretto con foglie opposte e decussate che formano una geometria molto regolare, rendendola facilmente riconoscibile anche a distanza.
Per secoli i semi furono utilizzati nella medicina popolare europea come drastico evacuante. Tuttavia la frequente comparsa di effetti tossici ne determinò il progressivo abbandono terapeutico.
Il latice bianco abbondante che fuoriesce da fusti e foglie è fortemente irritante per pelle e mucose ed è una caratteristica comune a molte euforbie.
Nel corso del XX secolo la specie attirò interesse come possibile coltura energetica per la produzione di idrocarburi vegetali e biocarburanti. Alcuni ricercatori la considerarono una potenziale fonte rinnovabile di combustibili grazie all'elevato contenuto lipidico dei semi.
In varie tradizioni popolari il latice veniva applicato localmente su verruche e altre escrescenze cutanee, pratica oggi sconsigliata a causa del rischio di irritazioni e ustioni chimiche.
I semi possiedono una notevole capacità germinativa e la pianta tende facilmente a disseminarsi spontaneamente nei terreni disturbati e negli ambienti antropizzati.
L'epiteto specifico lathyris deriva dall'antico nome greco utilizzato per indicare questa pianta già in epoca classica.
La specie compare in numerosi erbari e testi medici rinascimentali europei, nei quali veniva classificata tra i più potenti rimedi purgativi allora disponibili.
Per la sua struttura architettonica molto simmetrica e il fogliame glauco, Euphorbia lathyris è stata spesso coltivata anche come pianta ornamentale nei giardini storici.
Una credenza popolare molto diffusa sostiene che la pianta sia in grado di allontanare talpe e roditori dal terreno; tuttavia le prove scientifiche a sostegno di tale impiego risultano limitate e non conclusive. |
